WE UNCONSCIOUSLY STORE TENSION AND STRESS IN OUR BODIES.
What is Somatics?
Somatics - also known as Hanna Somatics and Clinical Somatics - is a way of learning through movement. It uses pandiculation to change the amount of unconscious tension we carry in our bodies. This is transformational because it works with our minds to change muscle length, creating a permanent change in our bodies and in our sense of being. Relieve pain, feel more alive, breathe more deeply, heal and recover more quickly!
Somatics can help you:
Reduce your stress and tension
Reduce and eliminate low back, shoulder, hip and other types of physical pain
Recover and regain mobility after injury or surgery
Reduce soreness and stiffness after exercise
Recover after childbirth/C-section
Move more freely
Breathe deeply
Feel more YOUt
The way we hold and use our bodies is a reflection of all the emotions, stresses, events, injuries, and accidents that we have lived through in our lives, positive and negative. Our bodies and our minds are deeply connected (even though it doesn't always feel that way). As we respond to:
â¢stress
â¢worry
â¢fast paced life styles
â¢injury/surgery
â¢workouts and routines
our bodies and our minds reflect and respond to each other - pretty amazing! We learn through repetition, and over time how we move and respond become habits that show up in our bodies.
Ever notice that on a stressful day your stomach hurts and your shoulders hunch up making your neck tense? That's the impact of tension you are unconsciously creating in the front body. Ever have a busy, productive day and notice that by the end of it your low back is sore? Same idea, except now the unconscious work is happening in your back body.
Over time, these unconscious habits in how we use our bodies leave us less connected and aware on the inside, leaving us with patterns of muscle tension that seem outside of our control. Thomas Hanna called this Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) a literal forgetting of how to both fully use and fully release the muscles in an area of the body. These patterns can then lead to pain and to other types of discomfort such as issues with digestion, breathing or anxiety, etc, or mean we work extra hard to do things that used to seem easy, or can't move as freely as we used to.
While each of us is unique, 3 main patterns of tension show up in the physical body:
In the front, as we protect ourselves
In the back, as we take action, and
In the sides, as we recover and compensate
This tension is controlled by our brains, but is often so unconscious that it feels like it is beyond our power to change. The good news is that these patterns can be changed, by re-educating our brains and reconnecting deeply to our bodies from the inside!

Hi, I'm Lisa.
Feel Alive and Free
Yoga and Somatic movement have been my passion for more than 20 years. Since my first yoga class I been fascinated by the ways in which being present in our bodies can help us to feel freer and stronger and to begin to change patterns that no longer serve us. Our work together will help you engage with your body and understand how to release tension, build strength and feel more alive. When we can see more clearly we can tap into our own inner strength and wisdom.
